Background:
Vasoactive intestinal peptide is a neuroprotective factorthat has a stimulatory effect on the growth of some tumor cells andan inhibitory effect on others. This gene encodes a protein that isupregulated by vasoactive intestinal peptide and may be involved inits stimulatory effect on certain tumor cells. The encoded proteincontains one homeobox and nine zinc finger domains, suggesting thatit functions as a transcription factor. This gene is alsoupregulated in normal proliferative tissues. Finally, the encodedprotein may increase the viability of certain cell types throughmodulation of p53 activity. Alternatively spliced transcriptvariants encoding the same protein have been described.
