Background:
This gene encodes a member of the C-lectin family, proteins that possess collagen-like sequences and carbohydraterecognition domains. This protein is a scavenger receptor, a cellsurface glycoprotein that can bind to carbohydrate antigens onmicroorganisms facilitating their recognition and removal. Inaddition, these receptors can recognize oxidized phospholipids sothey may also participate in removing oxidatively damaged orapoptotic cells.
