Background:
Dual specificity protein phosphatases inactivate theirtarget kinases by dephosphorylating both thephosphoserine/threonine and phosphotyrosine residues. Theynegatively regulate members of the MAPK superfamily (MAPK/ERK,SAPK/JNK, p38), which is associated with cellular proliferation anddifferentiation. Different members of this family of dualspecificity phosphatases show distinct substrate specificities forMAPKs, different tissue distribution and subcellular localization, and different modes of inducibility of their expression byextracellular stimuli. This gene product binds to and inactivatesp38 and SAPK/JNK, but not MAPK/ERK. Its subcellular localization isunique; it is evenly distributed in both the cytoplasm and thenucleus. This gene is widely expressed in various tissues andorgans, and its expression is elevated by stress stimuli. Threetranscript variants encoding two different isoforms have been foundfor this gene.
