Background:
CD117, also known as c-Kit or stem cell factor receptor (SCFR), is a type III receptor tyrosine kinase encoded by the KIT proto-oncogene. It serves as a core molecule regulating the proliferation, differentiation and survival of hematopoietic stem cells, melanocytes, germ cells and mast cells. The physiological ligand of CD117 is stem cell factor (SCF). Under pathological conditions, gain-of-function mutations in the KIT gene (such as mutations in exon 11 or exon 9) constitute a key mechanism driving the development of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and systemic mastocytosis.
