Background:
Proteins of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family areinvolved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix for both normalphysiological processes, such as embryonic development, reproduction and tissue remodeling, and disease processes, such asasthma and metastasis. This gene encodes a secreted enzyme thatdegrades casein. Its expression pattern suggests that it plays arole in tissue homeostasis and in wound repair. Transcript variantsencoding different isoforms have been described. [provided byRefSeq].
