Background:
Ornithine decarboxylase catalyzes the conversion ofornithine to putrescine in the first and apparently rate-limitingstep in polyamine biosynthesis. The ornithine decarboxylaseantizymes play a role in the regulation of polyamine synthesis bybinding to and inhibiting ornithine decarboxylase. Antizymeexpression is auto-regulated by polyamine-enhanced translationalframeshifting. The antizyme encoded by this gene inhibits ornithinedecarboxylase but does not accelerate its degradation.
