Background:
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to thesubtilisin-like proprotein convertase family. The members of thisfamily are proprotein convertases that process latent precursorproteins into their biologically active products. This encodedprotein is a calcium-dependent serine endoprotease. It isstructurally related to its family members, PACE and PACE4. Thisprotein is concentrated in the trans-Golgi network, associated withthe membranes, and is not secreted. It can process proalbumin andis thought to be responsible for the activation of HIV envelopeglycoproteins gp160 and gp140. This gene has been implicated in thetranscriptional regulation of housekeeping genes. Multiplealternatively spliced transcripts are described for this gene buttheir full length nature is not yet known. Downstream of thisgene's map location at 11q23-q24, nucleotides that match part ofthis gene's 3' end are duplicated and inverted. A translocationbreakpoint associated with lymphoma occurs between this gene andits inverted counterpart.
