Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) arose in 2002 and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in 2012 and have stricken humans in the past two decades as highly fatal human pathogens leading to considerable mortality and economic loss. Recent studies have shed light upon the zoonotic origins of emerging human pathogens including SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV were transmitted to humans from bats via civet cats for SARS and dromedary camels for MERS. CoV SARS-CoV has unique pathogenesis because it causes both upper and lower respiratory tract infections.
