⚠️ Current Outbreak Status (January 2026)

A small, contained cluster of 2 confirmed cases (both 25-year-old nurses at the same private hospital in Barasat) has been reported. Symptoms began late December 2025; confirmed Jan 13, 2026. One patient remains on ventilation; the other has improved. ~200 contacts traced—all negative and asymptomatic. Outbreak declared contained; WHO assesses low risk of further spread beyond India. No travel/trade restrictions recommended.

🔬 Key Facts

Source: Fruit bats → humans via contaminated food (e.g., raw date palm sap), infected animals, or close person-to-person contact (respiratory/bodily fluids).
Symptoms: Fever, headache, vomiting → severe encephalitis or respiratory failure.
Fatality: 40–75% in outbreaks.
Treatment: Supportive care only—no approved vaccine or antiviral.
